American Furniture Periods
The craftsmanship, beauty and value of fine furniture crafted in the early years of our country is growing in recognition and appreciated by collectors. Much sought after is American furniture produced in the thirteen original colonies in the period the mid to late 1600s through the first part of the 19th century.;
Among most renowned and valuable pieces of this period are those crafted by the Goddard Townsend family of Newport, Rhode Island. Quality signed pieces are highly desirable and values reflect this. A 1740 mahogany secretary bookcase made by Christopher Townsend sold at auction in New York for $8.25 million.

Depression Era
Depression era dates to the ‘20s, ‘30s or early 1940s. Pieces from the Depression era are growing in popularity with collectors and decorators. Demand for Depression era furniture and decorative arts should continue to grow as it approaches antique status (technically it’s not antique until it is more than 100 years old). Primary sources of Depression Era pieces include estate sales, garage sales, and conveniently, online auctions such as eBay. Look for quality pieces in excellent condition.
